About Solidarity
Solidarity is a collectively run radical library and space that has been part of the Lawrence community for over seven years. The Solidarity collective is comprised of individuals working towards building an anti-authoritarian community of resistance. The space is donation funded and volunteer staffed. Solidarity has a well established Anti-Oppression Policy.
The Solidarity Center was founded in 2001 as the Mother Earth Collective Library, and was located in a house in the Oread Neighborhood of Lawrence for two years (though changing name in 2002 to the Black Cat Collective). In 2003, the library and community projects associated with the space were moved to a commercial location near 14th and Massachusetts Street in the Oread Neighborhood, and renamed the Solidarity Revolutionary Center and Radical Library. In late 2004, the Solidarity Center moved downtown to the former site of the Campus Hideaway Cafe at 1119 Massachusetts Street. In 2006, Solidarity moved to the location at 1109 Massachusetts. In 2009, Solidarity moved briefly to 13 East 8th Street before moving to our current and (hopefully) permanent location in the Ecumenical Christians Ministries building at 1204 Oread Avenue.

It’s too bad there aren’t more places like Solidarity. This is the kind of library and space that is needed in every city in America! Whenever I go to the public libraries around the country, I am always disappointed by their lack of up-to-date materials with varying viewpoints on subjects like labor and class struggles, gender issues, and world politics. All I see are the same old authors with their establishment views parroting the status quo for the economic elite. Three cheers for Solidarity! Get Radical!
